BALLOON BOWLS

Balloon bowls are a fun way to get a hand built form with a closed mouth. So simple. You just roll out your clay quite thin, and drape it over any balloon.

Here is the thin sheet of patterned clay I will be ripping into strips and draping on the balloon.

Notice the neck of the balloon … leave the neck of the balloon unfilled so it can absorb the shock of a shrinking pot.

If you want to make sure your edges do not stick to the pot, cover them with a thin strip of newsprint as seen above on the right.

Finished balloon bowl. Cover with plastic and let it dry very slowly to prevent cracks. After the bowl has set up enough to support itself make a small hole in the neck with a pin. As the balloon slowly deflates it will naturally release from the clay.
