Balloon bowls are a fun way to get a hand built form with a closed mouth.
So simple.
You just roll out your clay quite thin, cut it in strips and drape it over any balloon.
Here is the thin sheet of patterned clay.
Cut or tear it into strips. As always have a damp towel nearby to lay the strips on to keep them nice and hydrated.
Once you begin to drape them on the balloon you will not have to dampen them. They will stick immediately.
You will need to take the time now to keep the top edges from sticking if that is the look you want. I often insert paper strips to keep them from sticking.
Notice the neck of the balloon … leave the neck of the balloon unfilled so the pot can shrink without cracking.
Keep working down the sides. You will need some kind of form to rest the balloon on as you work. It gets a little crazy and two hands just do not seem to be enough at this point!
I usually add a solid bottom.
Finished balloon bowl. Rest this on a flat surface until it begins to set. You have to make sure your bowl can stand and not just roll around. Cover with plastic and let it dry very slowly to prevent cracks.
The next day it should have set up enough to support itself. When you think it can stand on its own, get a needle or pin and make a small hole in the loose part of the neck. As the balloon slowly deflates it will naturally release from the clay.
